Why a temple tour from Chennai?
Chennai sits at the heart of South India’s temple country. Within a 150 km radius you can reach some of the most sacred Hindu shrines — Kanchipuram’s thousand temples, the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati, the golden Sripuram temple at Vellore and the Murugan hill temple at Tiruttani. A private cab with an experienced driver lets you cover these comfortably over a long weekend, without the fatigue of self-driving or the rigid timing of group tours.
Day 1 — Chennai to Kanchipuram
Start early from Chennai. Kanchipuram is only about 75 km away (roughly 2 hours). Visit the three main temples — Ekambareswarar, Kamakshi Amman and Varadharaja Perumal. The town is also famous for its handwoven silk sarees, so leave time for a loom visit. Stay overnight in Kanchipuram or push on toward Tirupati the same evening.
- Distance: ~75 km from Chennai
- Must-see: Ekambareswarar, Kamakshi Amman, Varadharaja Perumal
- Tip: Temples close between 12:00 and 16:00 — plan lunch in that window
Day 2 — Kanchipuram to Tirupati (Tirumala)
Drive about 110 km from Kanchipuram to Tirupati, then up the ghat to Tirumala. Book your darshan slot in advance through the official TTD channels. An experienced driver familiar with the ghat road and the parking-and-shuttle system at Tirumala makes the day far less stressful. If time permits, stop at Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanoor on the way down.
- Distance: ~110 km Kanchipuram to Tirupati
- Must-see: Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, Tiruchanoor Padmavathi Temple
- Tip: Pre-book darshan; carry valid ID for every pilgrim
Day 3 — Vellore & Tiruttani, return to Chennai
On the return leg, visit the Sripuram Golden Temple at Vellore (about 120 km from Tirupati) and, if your schedule allows, the Subramanya Swamy hill temple at Tiruttani. From Tiruttani it is a comfortable 90 km drive back to Chennai, completing the circuit.
- Distance: ~120 km Tirupati to Vellore, ~90 km Tiruttani to Chennai
- Must-see: Sripuram Golden Temple (Vellore), Tiruttani Murugan Temple
- Tip: Golden Temple has a dress code — check before you go
Choosing the right vehicle
For a couple or small family, a Sedan (Dzire / Etios) is comfortable and economical. For a larger family or group with luggage, an SUV (Ertiga / Tavera) or an Innova Crysta offers more space. Groups of 12 or more should book a Tempo Traveller with driver. All fares are billed per kilometre with a minimum billing of 130 km for one-way and 250 km/day for round trips; toll, inter-state permit, parking and driver batta (₹500/day) are extra and disclosed upfront.
